Torrential rainfall for the past one week has rendered many residents of upper GSA Road indoors or outdoors due to flooding. Most of the residents woke up yesterday in total bewilderment as the flood was above their knee-level. Residents disclosed that they had informed SSF Entrepreneurs Inc., the contractors that rehabilitated the road that culverts were not large enough to drain water when yesterday's flooding occurred.
Estimates of the damages caused by the flood on the GSA Road amounts to over US$50,000, though no official number was given.
Many residents in the community told this paper that their homes have been completely engulfed by the flood and that they have nothing but their roofs that are not soaked yet.
However SSF Entrepreneurs, Project Officer, Imad Nasser said that the company has instructed the Ministry of Public Works (MPW) that the road needed a canal and that the road needs to be opened to Zubah Town to help drain the water.
Mr. Nasser continued that the plan for the road comes from the MPW and they can suggest alterations but in the case of the GSA Road the Ministry scrapped the first plan and told the contractor to go ahead with the plans.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) for MPW, Michael Kpayil said the cause of the flood is that many inhabitants on the GSA Road have blocked the drainage with debris, which causes the flow of water to be slow or even stagnant.
The MPW PRO continued that the problem with GSA is maintenance not only is debris a problem but building on the drainage line and overgrown vegetation slows down the draining of water. He added that recently the Ministry gave community dwellers cutlasses to cut down vegetation in the community but the community failed to know that it was an annual event.
