Veep To Launch LIHLC Program Today
The Liberia International Humanitarian Law Committee (LIHLC) with the mandate to promote the ratification of and adherence to humanitarian law treaties, and the amendment of national legislation to comply with these treaties, and to contribute to the dissemination of International humanitarian law will be launched by the Vice President of Liberia today at the National Museum in Monrovia.
LIHLC is responsible to draw up advisory opinions on the Republic's position on problems of humanitarian law, draft treaties, and national implementation of legislation; examine proposals and coordinate activities of bodies concerned with the implementation of humanitarian law.
According to a release, the LIHLC will monitor the application of rules of humanitarian law at the national level; to cooperate and exchange information with the ICRC and other international organizations involved in the implementation of humanitarian law.
The Liberia IHL Committee will also promote the ratification of and adherence to humanitarian law treaties, and the amendment of national legislation to comply with the treaties, and to contribute to the dissemination of humanitarian law.
The IHL Committee has the responsibility to promote the implementation of international humanitarian law among the military and civilian populace in the Country.
International humanitarian law requires the military and Para-military to respect the rights of civilians, and combatants who surrender during armed conflicts.
To date, Liberia has signed, but has not ratified the African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons, the Armed Trade Treaty of 2013, the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict among others.
The Liberia International Humanitarian Law Committee launching program is expected to be attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps, the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary branches of government.
