War Crimes Group Hails TRC’s Report;…Wants Ellen, Others Listed To Resign
The Forum for the Establishment of War Court in Liberia has welcomed the final report of the Liberia Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and called for an unconditional resignation of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and other government officials. According to a document issued in Monrovia, the anti-war advocacy group said, “We the people hereby concur with the final report of the TRC, set out in Volume Two which among other things identified Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Messrs Charles Taylor, Prince Johnson, Kabineh Ja’rneh, Harry Greaves, Alhaji Kromah, Goerge Boley, Sekou Conneh and others as bearing the greatest responsibility for the nightmare created in Liberia.” The Forum for a War Crimes Court in Liberia said “as such, for the ones that are government officials, including President Sirleaf, we hereby call for their immediate resignation since they have lost the public trust to effectively function in various political capacities.”
The Anti-War Advocacy Group document entitled, “Concurrence with the TRC Final Report: The Peoples Declaration for the Unconditional Resignation of Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Others,” further states that they especially insist that President Sirleaf takes the lead as leader to avoid unspecified political and legal actions under the circumstances. The group believes Mrs. Sirleaf’s unconditional resignation is sina qua non to the national reconciliation efforts, deemed necessary as she lacks the will to implement the TRC report.” The group noted that by virtue of the constitutional authority of the people of Liberia, it has therefore authorized the Legislative and Judicial branches of government to proceed expeditiously to confer upon Vice President Joseph N. Boakai, the title of Acting President until the holding of free and fair democratic elections. The anti war group said as Acting President, Mr. Boakai shall present a petition from the People of Liberia to the United Nations requesting the creation of a war crimes court and ensure that all the recommendations of the TRC are carried-out in a timely and sequential manner.
They said in honoring the will of the Liberian people, President Sirleaf should cooperate fully with the Legislative and Judicial branches of government to ensure a smooth, peaceful transfer of power. The anti war group said, “overwhelming evidence of her direct involvement in the rape, torture, maiming as well as the execution, enslavement and murder of tens of thousands of defenseless Liberians makes it impossible for President Sirleaf to heal this nation and restore normalcy.” Concluding the group said “as it relates to Mr. Charles Taylor (Mrs. Sirleaf’s accomplice), regardless of the outcome of his trial at the Hague; she along with others bearing the greatest responsibility for war crimes and crime against humanity shall face prosecution at the War crime court for Liberia which the United Nations shall authorize.” The anti war movement said it believes that the establishment of a war crimes court in Liberia is committed to the full transformation of Liberia into a viable and vibrant democratic society where justice, Liberty , equality and the rule of law will remain the order of the day.
