Morrison O.G. Sayon

Report emanating from the Headquarters of the Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRS) has revealed that at least52, 192 Liberians are affected with the deadly HIV/AIDS virus. John Senda, Officer in Charge of the Red Cross Headquarters Clinic in Liberia told students of the B.W. Harris Episcopal High School in Monrovia that the HIV/AIDS pandemic is rapidly increasing due to the reckless attitude of some Liberians especially the young people who are sexually active. Serving as one of the panelists at the launch of a campaign to create awareness on the HIV/AIDS virus organized by the Girls Unit Health Club Association of the B.W. Harris Episcopal High School over the weekend, Mr. Senda reminded the students that AIDS is real and that no one should doubt its existence.

He said though the virus is deadly, it can also be prevented by using condom, avoiding affected blood transfusion and the use of contaminated needles. He then dispelled the notion that HIV/AIDS is an idea of white men noting, “This is not anyone's idea but a disease that can kill.”

Little Mildred C. Isaac, a 19 year-old girl has been the brain behind the organization of the Girls Unit Health Club Association at the B.W. Harris Episcopal School. In an interview, Mildred said the idea of organizing this club came about as a result of the number of young people who die each year due to the virus.  She said the program was introduced by Red Cross in 2006. Mildred noted that her interest is to help her peers to know the facts about the pandemic and properly prevent themselves against the virus.

She then called on the Liberia National Red Cross Society, the National AIDS Control Program (NACP), the World Health Organization (WHO) and other local and international partners to help the girl unit in its campaign to battle the HIV/AIDS.
