ECOWAS Wants “Information Law” Passed

After two days of exhaustive deliberations, media practitioners from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have resolved that the ECOWAS Commission should encourage member states to enact the Freedom of Information Laws in their respective states. The media practitioners also called on ECOWAS to facilitate capacity-building programmes for media stakeholders, to enable them cover more effectively, regional programmes and issues, especially as they relate to the attainment of the ECOWAS Vision 2010 Agenda.  They stressed the need for the ECOWAS Commission to develop a framework to involve media practitioners in its activities in a more structured and consistent manner; to assist the media in West Africa improve its capabilities to consolidate the region's peace and security agenda.

The resolution was adopted in a final communique at the close of a two-day regional meeting on the Media, Conflict and Democracy organized by the ECOWAS Commission in Accra, Ghana.  The meeting was organized in partnership with the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), with an objective to mainstream conflict prevention in media practice in member countries of ECOWAS through the adoption of minimum regional norms and standards on Hate Media and Democracy for media practitioners across the region. The Media practitioners in their eight-count resolution agreed to remind Heads of State of the need to abide by the ECOWAS Protocols and Decisions, such as the supplementary protocols on democracy and good governance, and the protocol relating to the mechanism for conflict prevention, management, resolution, peacekeeping and security, that they are signatories to.The participants among several other things called on the ECOWAS Commission to facilitate the adoption of model peace Radio Stations, Television stations and Newspapers among existing media organizations in member states in order to serve as lead institutions for the projection of hate-free media values.

The over 50 participants from ECOWAS Member States further commended the government and people for making the country available for the successful conclusion of the meeting.
