Ellen Wants Traditional Justice System Abolished
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has underscored the need for the traditional form of justice system in the country to be abolished because she thinks the traditional justice system is not the best way of seeking justice and as such must be abolished. The President made these assertions earlier this week in Grand Gedeh County when she visited the correction palace in the county, where she met the authority and interacted with some inmates at the prison.Dwelling further on the issue, President Sirleaf said: “We cannot continue to take the laws into our own hands. We have to get away from that; they (traditional form of justice) are not part of our laws and I think, this is where we need the media to help us get it from the attitudes and habits of our people and that would mean changing the people's values.
During the visit to the correction palace, some inmates who the President interacted with told her that they were being held based on suspicion of being involved in witch craft activities, something, which brought out the issue of the traditional justice system into discussion. The President was accompanied to the correction palace by the Minister of Justice Christiana Tarr, judicial officials and other senior ministers in her government.
