Several Arrested For Vandalizing Sierra Leonean Refugees Homes
Latest reports from Grand Cape Mount County say several persons have been nabbed for allegedly vandalizing and looting some new housing units, that are being constructed for use of Sierra Leonean refugees, who have chosen to live in Liberia under a reintegration plan they have reached with the UNHRC and the Liberian government. Our correspondent in the county gathered that the alleged suspects were apprehended while looting some of the doors, windows, ceilings and other facilities on the new housing units, which could be used as a residential center for the refugees under the reintegration plan.
It is not clear what could immediately happen to those reportedly arrested but our correspondent gathered that they would be sent to court to face prosecution.Over the weekend, news that came out of the county said the new units being constructed for the refugees by the UNHCR in partnership with the LRRRC in Sinje, Grand Cape Mount County, were vandalized by some unknown persons. According to the Field Officer of the LRRRC in the area, Mr. Newili Batuna reports they have received from implanting partners of the newly constructed structures, revealed that massive looting of the new facilities at the units were taking place. The report said the alleged perpetrators were in the habit of removing the doors, windows including the ceilings that have been installed on the various buildings.
The LRRRC official added that the act was being committed for commercial gains. He blamed the latest act on the lack of adequate security at the sites where the units are being constructed. At the same time, Mr. Batuna called on the community dwellers not to take interest in purchasing items that have been looted from the buildings, but rather, they should take the lead in reporting to his organization and the security forces any act of looting on the facilities.According to him, the prevailing situation has the propensity to undermine the efforts of the financier of the project partners, stressing that the latest incident is taking place in the wake of plans by the UNHCR and his organization to begin relocating the refugees as both institutions plan to complete the hand pumps and toilet facilities that could be used by the refugees as they occupy the new housing units.
