67-Year Old Woman sits WAEC Exams
It is often said that age is no barrier to education and that it is good for one to pursue education no matter their age or standing in society. This manifested itself when a 67 year- old woman in the Southeastern Liberian County of Grand Gedeh joined sixth graders to sit this year's West African Examinations Council Exams. Madam Jessie Gweyea, who has been struggling from primary level until she entered the sixth grade, said despite her age, she is happy to join other students to be a part of the national exams. She told our correspondent in the county that her desire to press on until reaching the sixth grade to sit the exams stemmed from her desire to forward her education after failing to attend grade school during her younger age.
Madam Gweyea said she has constantly been asking others to help her write her name and other communications, stressing that she felt one day that instead of asking others, she should learn to be able to do these things for herself. According to Madam Gweyea, she could not attend grade school while living with her parents as a child, stressing that the problem compounded because she too was a bad kid who never took education seriously. Madam Gweyea, who is a mother of nine children, said she later realized the importance of education after it became clear that she had to do certain things all by herself such as writing her own name and writing her letters or communications. She urged others who are in her category not to feel ashamed but rather they should still enter the classroom regardless of their age.
