“Poverty Reduction Strategy Will Be Meaningless If…Farmers Group Boss Asserts
The Executive Director of a local agricultural non-governmental organization, DIVERSITY FARM, Aaron S. G. Dahn, Sr. has warned that government's Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) will be meaningless if what he calls affirmative action is not taken to address the issue of poverty in the country. Speaking at the official launch of Diversity Farm's 2009/2010 Free Tree Crop Distribution Project last Saturday in Coleman Hill, Bomi County, he said countries like the United States of America and China are implementing programs that are driven by affirmative action; something which he said are making these countries great today. He emphasized that the affirmative action is the process of sacrificing for the weaker ones in society, adding that this is what his group subscribes to.
The local farmers group boss revealed that his organization is seeking an affirmative action through Diversity Farm program by reaching out to farmers in their villages and towns to empower them with tree crops such as cocoa, coffee, rubber, oil palm, citrus (oranges, grape fruits, lemon) etc. He disclosed that his organization is currently raising over seventy-seven thousand, seven hundred (77,700) tree crop seedlings and stumps that will be distributed to hundreds of farmers drawn from twelve (12) districts, twelve (12) towns in Bomi, Gbarpolu, Grand Cape Mount, Bong, Margibi and Montserrado Counties under the group's 2009/2010 project.
He noted that if such tangible steps are taken in the direction of affirmative action, then will government's highly publicized PRS be actualized. He elaborated that in keeping with the group's policy on affirmative action, “Diversity Farm is the real champion of the poverty reduction strategy”. He used the occasion to call on government to increase it's interest in his group's program, and also called on other well meaning individuals and institutions including diplomatic missions in the country to support his organization which he said is in dire need of support ranging from vehicles, motorbikes and subsidy to distribute crops to farmers and to monitor the process.
The launching program was graced by several individuals and institutions including the Charge d'affairs of the Chinese Embassy, Li Zhigong, the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), The Office of the 2nd lady, Madam Ketumu Y. Boakai, scores of benefitting farmers among others.
